In coastal protection and port development projects, assessing and optimising the performance of coastal and shoreline structures is an integral part of good design practice. HR Wallingford offers a range of services to allow development of an efficient design that also satisfies economic and environmental constraints. Our consultancy services cover all hydraulic aspects of the design of coastal and shoreline structures. We are routinely involved in the assessment of existing structures, the design of new structures and can also advise on rehabilitation. We have particular knowledge of the behaviour of breakwaters, seawalls, reclamations and revetments, and especially those structures where problems of stability, performance of design fall outside the ranges covered by conventional design methods.

- physical model studies to confirm and optimise structure design, improve performance and reduce construction costs
- understanding the potential impact of developments on adjacent coastlines
- assessing current and wave climate inside and around ports and harbours

- analysing overtopping, reflection and transmission performance
- determining the likelihood of toe scour
- producing appropriate engineering solutions.
Many of our staff are internationally recognised experts in this field. We lead the development of new techniques and knowledge through collaborative research studies funded by the European Community, UK Government and other public bodies. These studies have resulted in significant new guidance on wave overtopping predictions and flood forecasting tools. This research activity underpins our consultancy services, and ensures that we are delivering leading edge solutions for our clients worldwide.
