MITCH Mitigation of floods, droughts and landslides risks

Bringing together researchers, end users and beneficiaries with a leading involvement in the mitigation and management of floods, droughts and landslides.

What is MITCH?   (For more details, download the 'Mitch Leaflet' (PDF: 300 KB / 1 page))

  • Past European research has made significant advances in understanding, monitoring and forecasting climate induced natural hazard risks such as floods, droughts and landslides.
  • The MITCH Concerted Action seeks to translate these advances into practical benefits.

MITCH Objectives:

  • To provide a forum for discussion and debate.
  • To assist hazard planning and management by disseminating start-of-the-art research.
  • To match end user needs with research community capability.
  • To seek implementation pathways for research results.

How Can I be Involved?

What is a Concerted Action in the 5th Framework Programme?

The European Union's Fifth Framework Programme (FP5) supports international collaborative projects in the field of research, technological development and demonstration for the period 1998-2002. Within FP5, a Concerted Action provides co-ordination for existing research projects, for example to exchange experiences, to reach a critical mass, or to disseminate results. The Environment Agency has a policy commitment to be an active partner in appropriate FP5 projects.

The MITCH Workshops?   (For more details, see 'News & Events')

The Concerted Action will be conducted through a series of three workshops and via this active website. The workshops will cover.

  • Changing climate patterns, and their implications for management and design in altering approaches to drought, flood and landslide mitigation.
  • Monitoring of natural hazards, incorporating and implementing new techniques in flood forecasting and warning, dissemination and emergency management.
  • Natural hazards and flood management as a part of spatial planning and the role of insurance and risk appraisal in natural disaster management

A Concerted Action funded through the European Commission's 5th Framework Programme (Contract: EVG1-CT-2000-20001) with additional support from the UK Environment Agency Project Reference W5C(00)19
